YOU STARTED YOUR FILMMAKING CAREER WITH A FIRE AND PASSION THAT COULD TAKE OVER THE WORLD.
But now, you find yourself stuck in a rut. You’re burning long hours on projects that are mentally and physically draining, and working with clients who treat you poorly and pay you even worse.
You used to be creative, driven, and excited to learn new things. You were pulled by a future that felt boundless– these are the traits that pulled you into filmmaking in the first place.
If you could, you’d spend all your days working on creative and energizing projects.
But at some point, the ups and downs of the industry got to you, and now you find yourself feeling exhausted, frustrated, and burned out.
Unfortunately, getting stuck in a career rut shows up in a few different ways
- It can show up as constantly being frustrated with clients
- It can show up as daydreaming about being on other projects
- It can show up as losing your drive to be a filmmaker altogether
Next thing you know, you're thinking about quitting, giving up on your dream, and going back to waiting on tables.
What happened?
Where did it go wrong?
Weren't you supposed to be "Living the Dream?"

A FEW YEARS AGO, I FOUND MYSELF STUCK IN A MISERABLE CAREER RUT.
From the outside looking in, it looked like I’d made it. I had the “dream job.” I was running a production company in the middle of my 20s and I worked with celebrities on a regular basis.
But I was miserable.
I was under-utilized, under-appreciated, and underpaid. I used to lie away at night and worry that I would be stuck, unhappy, and stressed out for the rest of my working life.
On my way to work every day, I passed a lottery billboard showing the latest jackpot. Each time, for the rest of the commute, I would dream about what I might do if I won all that money. While that dream changed a little from day to day– one single dream came up over and over again... If I won the lottery, I’d buy a camera, quit my job, and go make projects I cared about – instead of just the projects my boss cared about.
Every day, driving past the lottery billboard, this vision became clearer and clearer, until one day, I knew I couldn’t wait any longer. Lottery or no lottery, I needed to make a change.
A couple of months later, I embarked on a journey that became a wild and crazy ride of transformation.
I thought long and hard about what I wanted my career to look like. WHAT were my dream projects? WHO were my dream clients? I sought out mentors, did tons of research on what camera and equipment to buy, and scheduled a bunch of lunch and coffee dates with industry professionals. (Lots of tacos were consumed during this time.)
Finally, the time came to quit my job and build the career I wanted.
Once I breathed in that fresh air of professional freedom, I knew there was no going back.
The first year I decided to take control over my career,
I was happier, less stressed – and best of all
I DOUBLED MY INCOME!
And little did I know, that was just the beginning. Since then, I’ve gotten so much clarity on the things that held me back in the beginning – the things that kept me in a job where I was unhappy and constantly daydreaming about winning the lottery.
As the years continued, I’ve not only launched a successful freelance career, but I’ve also built a production company I’m proud of – all while working with people I love and clients I care about.
From the outside looking in, it might look like I went from burned-out to break-through by getting a “Lucky Break” – but actually, there was a lot of planning, research, trial-and-error, and hard work that went into my transformation.
Now I want to share this life-changing, career-launching, doubt-crushing experience with you.
"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

“There are just a small handful of people I have met throughout my years that have made a profound impact on my life and John Huber with Field Guide to Filmmaking tops my list.”
Sam Wetzel
“John and Shelley have been lifelong friends personally and professionally. They have given me countless tips and pointers over my career that have kept me relevant. Staying connected to the right people in the industry and business sector has been a huge part of their success. They run every aspect like a business and are always eager to help other owner ops.”

I’m going to let you in on a little secret.
Most filmmakers think they need to spend a TON of money in order to be successful (or to even start)-- but really, all you need to get started is a plan.
Sure, you could spend:
- $100,000 on film school
- $12,000 on a new camera package
- $12,000 on a top-end computer
- $5,000 for a basic lighting kit
The list goes on and on… but these are not what is going to get you work. In fact, this is so key, I’m going to say it one more time for the cheap seats in the back:
The gear is not what gets you work.
YOU are what gets you work.
And to do that, it all starts with a solid career plan. You may decide to buy gear in time, or upgrade to the latest and greatest equipment, but when you do, you’ll do so with intention and strategy.
Filmmaking is expensive! There’s no doubt about it. But mistakes, wasted time, and missed opportunities can be far more costly. Having a clear picture of what success looks like will help you avoid these pitfalls before they happen.

A Final Note From Your Guide, John Huber
Here’s the truth – too many filmmakers leave their careers up to chance. They only work on the projects that fall in their lap, and never realize they have the power to make their own luck. I’m betting you’ve met a few people like this in the industry– they tend to be a bit cranky, bitter, and checked-out.
I have a feeling you don’t want to end up like this. And if you’re finding yourself in a career rut, you may be worried you’re heading that way. But I can assure it’s never too late to start turning things around. All it takes is having a clear vision of where you want your career to go, and then taking action to get there.
